Although his career had pretty much flamed out by the start of the '80s, there were few punk-era major-label performers as intensely controversial as Tom Robinson. Cutting his teeth with folk-rockers Café Society (who released a Ray Davies-produced record on the head Kinks' Konk label in 1975), Robinson roared into the spotlight in 1978 with a great single ("2-4-6-8 Motorway") and a much-ballyhooed contract with EMI. What was remarkable about this was that Robinson was the kind of politically conscious, confrontational performer that major labels generally ignored: he was openly gay and sang about it ("Glad to Be Gay"), vociferous in his hatred for then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, helped form Rock Against Racism, and generally spoke in favor of any leftist political tract that would embarrass the ruling ultraconservative Tory government. His debut album, 1978's Power in the Darkness, was an occasionally stunning piece of punk/hard rock agitprop that, along with being ferociously direct, was politicized rock that focused more on songs than slogans. However, by the release of the second album, the Todd Rundgren-produced TRB Two, the songs were getting weaker and Robinson began sounding like a boring ideologue. Similarly, the band, even terrific guitarist Danny Kustow, sounds as if on automatic pilot. By the end of the '70s, Robinson had been dropped by EMI and signed to maverick major IRS as a solo act. In a wise move, he ditched the hard rock polemics of TRB for a more sophisticated pop/rock sound, but found his audience dwindling. A brief period of silence ended with him, somewhat surprisingly, signing with Geffen and releasing Hope and Glory. It was a politically tinged but mostly mainstream rock record that featured a cover of that decidedly non-punk song, Steely Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," with Robinson deftly exploring the song's homoerotic subtext. Still, it wasn't enough to resuscitate his career and for the remainder of the decade Robinson released England-only albums that tried the patience of even longtime fans. As to his current whereabouts, Robinson is (amazingly) rumored to be married to a woman and raising a family in England. He's still writing songs and occasionally performing, also working as a DJ for BBC6.

Steve Kroon percussion
Teaming with formidable rhythm mates as bassist Ron Carter and drummer Victor Lewis should inspire any jazz pianist to do their level best. Pianist Scott fares very well with them throughout, as does percussionist Steve Kroon for six of the 11 selections. Scott's value is in economy, rarely going into histrionics or simple-minded LCD tunes; he strikes a balance in the middle. Most of the material, seven tunes of 11, are of his making. After the beginning salvo "Like a Child at Play," with its neat and clean beginners' melody grafted onto Carter's ostinato bass and Kroon's disparate congas, the program is broken up into segments for each ensemble. The trio without Kroon tackles a modified intro and standard, well-swung reading of "Cheek to Cheek" complete with Carter's patented walking quarter note solo; the processional piano-bassline of the title track buoys a virile workout by Lewis; and there are the slightly bossa version of Wayne Shorer's "Virgo" and updated bluesy swing take of "'Round Midnight." Kroon returns for the next five; the swing to Afro-Cuban mambo inflections of the pop tune "Where Is the Love?," the free-form attitude but settled 4/4 time of "Abstract Realities," and the descarga/ostinato bass-derived "Work in Progress" are as spirited and real as you need them to be. Scott also utilizes electric piano for the rambling "Yum" with acoustic in the mid-section, and the reggae flavored "Da'at," based on a Hebrew precept. The closer "Live & Learn," cleverly shifting from 2/4 to 3/4, sans Kroon, is annoyingly faded out after only a few minutes. Nevertheless, Scott grows and progesses in degrees of both subtlety and creativity with every recording. This shows he's on his way to becoming a top ten player. Recommended.

One of the most successful -- and openly commercial -- hip-hop acts to come from Italy at the end of the '90s, Gemelli DiVersi formed in Milan in 1997 from the merging of two different rap duos, La Cricca (including rapper Emanuele "Thema" Busnaghi and DJ Alessandro "THG" Merli) and Rima Nel Cuore (MC Luca "Grido" Aleotti, the younger brother of Articolo 31's J-Ax, and singer Francesco "Strano" Stranges). Their debut single, "Un Attimo Ancora," released in 1998 and built upon the chorus of Pooh's '70s hit "Dammi Solo un Minuto," turned out to be a huge success, leading the album Gemelli DiVersi to very good sales. After taking part in a Coca-Cola TV commercial, in 2000 the band released its sophomore effort, 4 X 4, and the photo book E Mò lo Sai. The next year saw the release of Come Piace a Me, including six live recordings and an unreleased track. After a tour supporting Eros Ramazzotti, in 2002 the band recorded Fuego, which included the single "Mary," about a girl sexually abused by her father. The song stayed at the top notches of the Italian charts for eight months, turning out to be Gemelli DiVersi's greatest hit so far. In 2003 they won the Best Italian Act award at the MTV European Music Awards, while in 2004 they released the more song-oriented Reality Show. Then in 2005 they took part in the Italian Live8, and the following year they started their own program on MTV Italy called Pimp My Wheels, a two-wheel version of the more famous Pimp My Ride, and they won the Best Band award at the first Italian edition of the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. In 2007 they released Boom!, a return to their hip-hop roots, which included the track "Che Mondo Meraviglioso," with Eros Ramazzotti as a guest.
